About us

The German Meteorological Society (DMG) is a registered, not-for-profit association which aims to promote science in the broad field of pure and applied meteorology and to disseminate meteorological knowledge. The DMG also represents the interests of physical oceanography.

The DMG is open not only to meteorologists but also to scientists from related disciplines, other scientific societies, as well as companies and laymen who support similar objectives as the DMG or who want to support the DMG’s aims.

The DMG does not carry out its own research tasks. Rather, it offers its currently approximately 1,800 members a forum for scientific information and discussion.

The DMG promotes young scientists and supports work in the meteorological field by conferring honorary and promotional awards and by implementing recognition procedures.

The DMG also exchanges expertise with other scientific associations such as the German Geounion Alfred Wegener Foundation, the German Physical Society (DPG) and the German Geophysical Society (DGG). There is a particularly close collaboration with the Reinhard Süring Foundation, which focuses on supporting measures for collecting, securing and preparing climatological data.

The DMG also maintains close international ties. In particular these include joint activities with its sister meteorological societies in Austria (ÖGM) and Switzerland (SGM), including the joint meteorological conference, the “DACH-Meteorologentagung”, and the joint meteorological journal, the “Meteorologische Zeitschrift”. Through its membership of the European Meteorological Society (EMS) the DMG maintains links with more than 35 meteorological societies in Europe.
